Juna Sleep Systems is coming to Rapid City – in the NE corner of the old Albertsons building.
Juna is known for being locally owned and locally built, with roots right here in South Dakota. Instead of shipping in mass-produced beds from across the country, their mattresses are handcrafted in the midwest, built with a focus on long-term comfort and quality. They buy only the best materials for their mattresses that last for decades, not just years like the mass produced mattresses.

The City Had Meetings…

Legal & Finance Committee Meeting (April 15, 2026)

  • Land Donated to "Passages": The committee voted to declare several city lots surplus and appointed freeholders to appraise them. This land will support "Passages," a highly successful local program that provides rehabilitation, support, and housing to women transitioning out of the prison system.

  • Opioid Settlement Funds: The committee amended their agenda and voted to authorize the city to join a settlement that will allow Rapid City to receive and allocate future opioid settlement funds.

  • Healing Way TIF Approved: Resolutions to create the Healing Way TIF District and approve its project plan both passed unanimously.

Public Works Committee (April 14, 2026)

  • Chapel Lane Bridge Funding Strategy: The city's application for a state bridge improvement grant was denied because federal government shutdowns delayed the necessary permits required for "bid-ready" plans. With plans now completed, the committee acknowledged a strategy to reapply in 2027, increasing the city's funding match from 20% to 30% to improve their application score. City engineers warned that paying for the $8 million bridge without state help would require halting all city street maintenance projects for two full years.

  • Water Reclamation Facility on Budget: Project Manager Eddie Lopez reported that the $173 million Water Reclamation Facility improvement project is currently 48% complete and on schedule. The committee heavily praised the management of the project, noting that unforeseen change orders have amounted to just 0.4% of the total contract value.

City Council Meeting (April 20, 2026)

  • Backyard Hens Approved: Following an extensive public comment period where residents highlighted the benefits of local food security, pest control, and teaching children responsibility, the council passed the second reading of an ordinance to allow backyard hens. The measure passed on a 6-4 vote.

  • Major South-Side Development: The council approved the creation of Pennington County Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District No. 8 in a 9-1 vote. This TIF will support a large multi-use development that is expected to bring new retail spaces and require significant arterial road improvements, including turning lanes and a roundabout on Catron Boulevard, Black Hills Boulevard, and Fifth Street.

  • National Volunteer Week: Mayor Jason Solomon issued a proclamation officially recognizing April 19-25, 2026, as National Volunteer Week to honor the thousands of locals who dedicate their time to the community.

Planning Commission Meeting (April 23, 2026)

  • Vacation Rentals Allowed in ADUs: The commission recommended the approval of an ordinance amendment allowing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to be used as short-term vacation rentals. City staff supported the change because zoning laws mandate that ADU property owners must live on the premises, which provides on-site supervision to quickly address any neighborhood nuisance issues.

  • West Main Coffee Shop Put on Hold: A developer requested a variance to turn an old antique shop at 1114 West Main Street into a coffee and flower shop. The project faced pushback because the new use requires 42 parking spaces, but the lot only has 12. The commission voted to postpone their decision to May 7th, giving the applicant time to secure a shared parking agreement or a land lease from the neighboring railroad.

  • Campbell Street Storage Facility Approved: The commission approved plans for an outdoor storage yard with covered canopies on Campbell and East Minnesota. The developers compromised with the city by agreeing to pave the main entrance and use asphalt millings with dust control for the back storage lots.
